- Chant du Noireau
|
Sleeps 8 to 10
With its enclosed gardens
and well established orchard leading down to the banks of the
River Noireau, our house provides both comfort and space. Chant
du Noireau itself is in the countryside and yet it takes only
5 minutes on foot to reach the centre of Pont d'Ouilly.
We had the house built
in 1998 (by French builders under the direction of a French architect)
on the site of an old cottage which unfortunately had seen better
days.

|
- Pont d'Ouilly is a small bustling town
with many shops, including a mini-supermarket, boulangeries/patisseries,
butchers/charcuterie, pharmacy, newsagent, hairdressers, post-office,
petrol station, restaurants and bars.
-
- The river Noireau meets the larger river
Orne in the town. The bridge across the Orne gives wonderful
views and is at the heart of the town, joining what were formerly
two separate communities.
-
- Just by the bridge, at the side of the
Orne on Sunday afternoons during the season, there is an open
air dance - la Guingette - at which everyone is welcome.
It is an important kayaking centre, but there are also pedalos
and rowing boats for the less adventurous. It is an excellent
area for fishing - daily/fortnightly licences are available in
the town. There is a park with boules pitches just down the road
by the side of the Orne. Tennis, archery and horse riding are
available locally and officially marked walks begin just down
the lane which leads to the house itself.
Within 15 minutes of the town by car you will find golf, swimming
in a modern pool with water slides etc., climbing, bungee jumping,
water sports, hang gliding, miniature furniture and railway museums,
craft and geological/mining museums and, of course, chateaux
and beautifully laid out gardens. Some facilities are only available
in the main season.

- The area
-
- Pont d'Ouilly is in the Department of
Calvados. It is about 1 hour from the ferry port at Caen (Ouistreham),
1 1/2 hours from Le Havre, 2 hours from Cherbourg, 3 hours from
Paris and 3 1/2 hours from the Channel Tunnel terminal at Calais
along the motorway.
-
- The town is at the centre of the Suisse
Normande, an area known for its beautiful undulating countryside
and its rivers. It is also an area where local produce is much
in evidence, including well-known cheeses such as Camembert,
Pont l'Evequeand Livarot.

Nor should you forget the cider,Calvados
and Pommeau which are all widely available at the many producers
along the "Route du Cidre".
Only 15 minutes away by car is the ancient
town of Falaise, with its popularweekly market, interesting churches
and, of course, the famous Castle, birthplace of William the
Conqueror. Bayeux is an hour's drive away, as are the D-day
beaches and the impressive Memorial pour la Paix' at Caen.
There are a number of excellent but sensibly
priced restaurants in the area, details of which are supplied
as part of the information pack provided when a booking is made.
